Joel Nagel has built his career at the intersection of law, finance, diplomacy, and real estate. Joel Nagel was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and pursued his undergraduate studies at Allegheny College, graduating with honors in both Political Science and German in 1986. As a Fulbright Scholar, he studied at the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, Germany, and later at the Hague Academy of International Law. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from West Virginia University in 1989, before completing a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International and Comparative Law with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center in 1990. These experiences deepened his interest in cross-border transactions and global commerce, blending legal expertise with business insight, a dual lens that has guided his career ever since.
Before founding his own firm, Joel began his career with Buchanan Ingersoll, one of the nation’s largest law firms. He later served in the Office of the Chief Counsel for International Commerce at the U.S. Department of Commerce. He also completed a clerkship at the European Commission in Brussels in the Directorate-General’s Office for Competition. His early work provided him with valuable exposure to international law and regulation, as well as a fluency in German that continues to support his global practice.
In 1992, Joel founded Nagel & Associates, LLC, a boutique law firm built around long-term relationships and tailored strategies. The firm developed expertise in international asset protection, cross-border transactions, estate planning, immigration, and emigration. Joel has been admitted to the bar in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, giving him the ability to serve clients across multiple jurisdictions.
As his legal practice grew, Joel recognized that his clients were searching for more than just legal security. Many wanted to build real lives abroad, investing, retiring, or raising families internationally. That realization drove his transition from advisor to entrepreneur.
In 1996, he co-founded ECI Development, a real estate company specializing in the creation of intentional resort and residential communities throughout Latin America and Central America. From luxury oceanfront living to eco-friendly neighborhoods, ECI has sought to make international property ownership accessible not only to investors and retirees but also to remote workers and digital nomads. Its flagship projects include Gran Pacifica in Nicaragua, Grand Baymen, and the Marriott Residences in Belize, as well as additional communities across Costa Rica and Panama. Each development is designed with comprehensive infrastructure, including healthcare, internet connectivity, and recreational amenities, ensuring that residents can relocate confidently while enjoying affordable luxury and a high quality of life.
To complement his work in real estate, Joel turned his attention to financial services. In 2003, he founded Caye International Bank in Belize. As chairman, he has overseen its growth into one of the region’s most respected financial institutions, recognized for its conservative management, strong capitalization, and client-focused approach. Over the years, the bank has earned multiple international awards for excellence in offshore and private banking, underscoring its reputation as a trusted partner for global clients. Today, Caye International Bank provides the financial foundation that supports cross-border investments, business operations, and retirement planning for clients around the world.
Joel’s influence extends beyond his businesses. From 2015 to 2017, he served as Belize’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna, where he represented Belize at organizations including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Over the years, he has also served on numerous boards and advisory councils in both the Americas and Europe, promoting stronger transatlantic relationships in law, commerce, and investment.
He is a frequent speaker at international conferences, sharing insights on asset protection, banking, and global investing at events such as FreedomFest, Stansberry Research, International Living, The Oxford Club, and The Global Escape Hatch. In addition to live events, Joel has been featured on numerous podcasts and media interviews, helping to make his expertise accessible to a broader audience. His commentary has appeared in publications including U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, International Living Magazine, and The Pittsburgh Business Times.
Service and community have been central to Joel’s life. As President of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh (2001–2002), he launched the widely publicized first annual “Ducky Derby” fundraiser. He also helped secure donations and land for three Roberto Clemente Health Clinics in rural Nicaragua, bringing healthcare access to underserved communities. Later, as Governor of Rotary District 7300 (2005–2006), he led a district of 1,500 members across 51 clubs, achieving the highest per capita giving of any Rotary district in the United States and the second highest worldwide. Today, he continues to support philanthropic projects in both the United States and abroad, including an annual toy drive in San Pedro, Belize, and initiatives aimed at raising funds for environmental preservation.
Beyond law, finance, and philanthropy, Joel is passionate about sports. He is a co-owner of the Vienna Vikings, one of Europe’s premier American football teams. For him, the Vikings represent more than athletics; they embody teamwork, perseverance, and cultural exchange, the same qualities that have shaped his career.
At the heart of everything is family. Joel and his wife, Susan, have been married since 1986 and are the proud parents of seven children.
